Narratives of 'parenting' and social support in three popular websites

As online social networks and mobile technologies continue to proliferate and embed themselves in everyday practices, parenting websites are an increasingly popular resource. This presentation explores three such websites: Mumsnet, Dad.info, and Netmums, examining the different narratives of 'parenting' and social support that each site foregrounds. Joe gives an overview of his multimodal discourse analysis of the homepages and layouts of each website and presents early insights from his nascent narrative analysis of loosely structured telephone interviews with members of the management team at each website. The rationale for conducting interviews was to explore these individuals' narrative identities - as parents themselves, their ideas about parenting, and their intentions in shaping the websites' ethos, layouts and content.
